What is web design?

Web design is the planning and building of what visitors see and use on your website — the layout, the wording, the navigation and how it behaves on a phone. Web development is the code underneath it. On a small business site of five to seven pages, one person usually does both.

Design is the half visitors see and development is the half they do not. On a five-page business site, one person normally does both.

Web design, web development and website designers

These three get used interchangeably in quotes, which is one reason prices look so inconsistent. They are different jobs.

TermWhat it actually meansWho you need for a small business site
Web designLayout, structure, wording, images, how it looks and reads on a phone.Yes — this is most of the job.
Web developmentThe code: templates, forms, payment gateways, anything custom.Some. A brochure site needs little; a store needs plenty.
Website designerThe person doing the design work, often the development too.One person is normal at this size.
Web developerA specialist in the code. Usually agency or in-house.Rarely, unless the site does something unusual.

A quote for 'web development' on a five-page brochure site is a signal worth questioning. It is design work with a little development in it, and it should be priced that way.

What a website designer actually does

Very little of the week is spent choosing colours. The work is closer to structuring an argument than decorating a page.

  • Works out what the site has to achieve — enquiries, bookings, sales, or simply proving the business is real.
  • Decides the page list and what belongs on each page.
  • Writes or edits the words, which is where most of the time goes on a small site.
  • Lays it out for a phone first, because that is where most South African traffic arrives.
  • Connects the functional parts — enquiry forms, maps, payment gateways.
  • Tests and launches it, including redirects if a site already existed.

The step-by-step version of how that runs on a real project is in our web design process.

What web design costs in South Africa

Small business web design runs R1 500 to R6 500 from a freelancer and R15 000 to R40 000 from an agency. The gap is billing model rather than quality — agencies bill hours against a scope that grows, freelancers usually quote a number.

Neither band tells you what you are getting, which is why the website design packages page lists inclusions rather than adjectives.

What this looks like priced. We do the design and the build together for a fixed once-off fee from R2 950, quoted before anything starts. See the website design packages.

Where we build websites

Every build is done remotely, so the whole country is covered at the same price. We keep dedicated pages for the metros most enquiries come from: Cape Town · Johannesburg · Pretoria · Durban · Sandton · Port Elizabeth · Bloemfontein.

Common questions

Is web design the same as web development?

No. Design is what visitors see and use; development is the code underneath. On a small business site the same person usually does both, which is why the words get used interchangeably.

What is website development?

Website development is the building of the code a site runs on — templates, databases, forms, integrations and payment gateways. It is the half of the job you never see. A brochure site needs a little of it; an online store needs a lot.

What do web developers do all day?

Builds and maintains the code a site runs on — templates, forms, integrations, payment gateways and anything custom. On a five-page brochure site there is little genuine development work.

Do I need a web designer for a small business?

Not always. You need one when the hours cost more than the quote, when the site has to rank, or when it has to do something — take payments, take bookings — rather than just exist.

What is responsive web design?

A layout that reflows to fit whatever screen it is on rather than shrinking a desktop page. It is not optional: most South African visitors arrive on a phone, and Google indexes the mobile version.
