SEO for a small business website
A new website takes three to six months to rank for anything competitive, and longer in a crowded trade. What it can do almost immediately is appear for your own business name and show up in the map pack. The structural basics belong in the build. Ongoing SEO is a separate service, and most small businesses need less of it than they are sold.
What a new website can and cannot rank for
The honest split matters, because most disappointment with a new site comes from expecting the second column on day one.
| Query type | Realistic timeline | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Your business name | Days | Being indexed at all. Nothing competes with you for your own name. |
| Map pack, local searches | 2 – 6 weeks | A claimed Google Business Profile with a real address and consistent details. |
| Long, specific phrases | 1 – 3 months | Having a page that actually answers that exact phrase. |
| Service plus suburb | 3 – 6 months | One page per service, and how many established competitors there are. |
| Broad head terms | 12 months+ | Links and reputation built over years. Often not worth chasing. |
Anyone promising first-page rankings for a competitive term in six weeks is either redefining the term or selling you something else.
How to make your website appear on Google
Appearing on Google is a different problem to ranking well, and it is the easy one. Four things, in order.
- Be crawlable. No stray robots.txt block, no page left noindexed after launch. This is the single most common cause of a site that never appears at all.
- Submit a sitemap in Google Search Console. Free, takes ten minutes, and it is how Google finds pages it has no other route to.
- Claim your Google Business Profile. For a local trade this does more in a fortnight than a year of anything else.
- Give each service its own page. Search engines rank pages, not businesses. One page covering four services ranks properly for none of them.
Point four is the structural one and it is decided when the page list is agreed, not afterwards — which is why it sits in what to include on a business website rather than in an SEO retainer.
What is included in a build, and what is not
Being precise about this saves an argument later.
| Included in every build | Not included |
|---|---|
| Page titles and meta descriptions written per page | Ongoing content publishing |
| Heading structure and one page per service | Link building or digital PR |
| Fast, mobile-first pages | Monthly rank reporting |
| Sitemap, clean URLs, Search Console submission | Competitor gap analysis |
| Google Business Profile set up or claimed | Paid search management |
| 301 redirects on a rebuild so existing rankings survive | Ongoing technical audits |
The left column is structural. It is cheaper to do during the build than to retrofit, which is the whole reason it is included rather than sold separately.
When you genuinely need an SEO specialist
Most small businesses do not, at least not first. The order that works is a structurally sound site, then a claimed profile, then reviews, then content — and only then paid SEO help.
You probably need one when you are competing in a crowded urban trade against businesses with a decade of history, when search is your main acquisition channel and the numbers justify a retainer, or when a site has been penalised or has lost traffic after a redesign.
You probably do not when your site is under six months old, when you have not yet claimed your Google Business Profile, or when you do not have a page for each service you sell. Paying for SEO before those are done is buying acceleration on something that has not started moving.
We build the structural side into every site and then tell you honestly where you sit. We do not sell an ongoing SEO retainer, so there is nothing here we are trying to talk you into.
Built in, not bolted on. Every site we build ships with the structural SEO basics done — titles, headings, one page per service, sitemap and profile setup — on all three website design packages, from R2 950.
Where we build websites
Every build is done remotely, so the whole country is covered at the same price. We keep dedicated pages for the metros most enquiries come from: Cape Town · Johannesburg · Pretoria · Durban · Sandton · Port Elizabeth · Bloemfontein.
Common questions
How long before a new website ranks on Google?
Days for your own business name, two to six weeks for the map pack with a claimed profile, and three to six months for competitive service-plus-suburb phrases. Broad head terms take a year or more and are usually not the right target for a small business.
Do you do SEO?
We build the structural side into every site — titles, headings, one page per service, speed, sitemap and Search Console. We do not sell an ongoing SEO retainer. If you reach the point of needing one, we will say so rather than invent a package.
How do I get my website to show up on Google?
Make sure nothing blocks crawling, submit a sitemap through Google Search Console, claim your Google Business Profile, and give each service its own page. The first two are free and take an afternoon.
Is SEO included in the packages?
The structural part is, on all three. Titles, descriptions, headings, page-per-service structure, speed, sitemap and profile setup are in every build at no extra cost. Ongoing work is not.
